REEL TO REEL: SESAME STREET EDITION

Add comments

Today Sesame Street turns 40 years old. As I still pour out tall boys of 211 for Fred Rogers,HipHopDX let me look back at some of the Hip Hop moments that happened in the land of “Sunny days…

Ice-T: Word On The Street

His cameo in Breakin‘ should’ve proved that Ice-T was the original rapper-turned-actor. So to see his “Sesame Street” cameo from what looks to be the set of “Law & Order” wasn’t all that surprising. Considering the public outrage against him for the 1992 single “Cop Killer,” Ice-T’s eventual guest appearance ranks as a close second to permanent “Sesame Street” character “Gordon” as the biggest career turnaround. Blaxploitation fans may remember a youngerRoscoe Orman playing the lead role the movie Willie Dynamite long before he traded in his mink for button down oxfords. We’re guessing Ice isn’t too broken up about it. Rhyme still pays, as evidenced by the footage above.

LL Cool J And Elmo: Addition Expedition

Opting to go profanity free for a few albums not only got LL in the good graces of his grandmother, it also landed him another platinum plaque and a cameo on “Sesame Street.” Emcees are always getting maligned for chasing mainstream money and exposure. But sinceLL is a father of four, and mainstream terrestrial radio is inundated with what B.o.B referred to as Patron and swag,” I’m not mad at Mr. Smith and Elmo showing kids how to count and get their grammar game tight.

Michael Jackson: A Sesame Street Christmas Special

Before any of you start e-thugging in the comment section, I’ll admit that, technically Michael Jackson is not Hip Hop. But in honor of the late “King of Pop,” we respect the legacy. Mikebrought elements of breakdancing and pop-locking to MTV’s doorstep at a time when they weren’t trying to touch Hip Hop. And in a “Sesame Street” episode that featured Ethel Murman(we promise this is the only time we’ll reference ol girl on DX…ever) young MJ brought some much needed excitement. Would you expect anything less from the guy who featured Heavy Dand Notorius B.I.G. on his tracks as well as openly endorsing Jay-Z?
